Days of the Week in Spanish

The days of the week are standard teaching in many Spanish classes. I would suggest teaching them starting in 1st or 2nd grade. Here are a handful of ideas I have used in my class when teaching them.

Song:
I take the tune of My Darling Clementine and start with the day 'domingo' and continue with the rest of the days of the week. "domingo, lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábado." The song continues to repeat as long as you want to play it.

Calendar:
I have a great calendar by Carson-Dellosa that has everything in Spanish on one side of each piece of the calendar. This a great calendar for any classroom because the other side of each label is in English, but it is perfect for any elementary Spanish classroom. Part of our weekly routine is saying "Hoy es ____" "Ayer fue ____" and "Mañana será ____"

Game Idea:
I took this song and split the class into seven groups. Each group was assigned a day of the week and given a slip of paper that had written on it their day of the week. Students then held up their day of the week as the song played. Students were then forced to pay attention to the order of the days of the week. You can play this game as a quick warm up.

Incentive:
This set of vocabulary is difficult to attach a movement or picture. I would suggest giving students an opportunity to come up with their own song, movement, advertisement, skit or poster to remember the days. One group of 2nd graders decided to look up the way to say the days of the week in sign language and used that every time they said the day of the week.

Worksheet:
For students who can read and write (1st and up) you can use the word search and crossword puzzle at activityvillage.co.uk

Video:
I have posted this video in my last post about teaching verbs. Easily this video could be used in creating a skit or acting out the song to practice the days of the week.
